The following information is the latest available from the Government of Canada. Those students travelling to or from Canada must check the COVID-19 guidelines for their destination.
Travelling to Canada
The Government of Canada now requires that all incoming travellers to Canada must use the ArriveCAN mobile app to provide mandatory travel and public health information before and after your entry into the country. ArriveCAN is available for iOS, Android and the web, and can communicate in English, French and Spanish. You need to submit your information to ArriveCAN within 72 hours before arriving in Canada. The information you need to provide includes:
- Contact information
- Travel details and documents
- Vaccination information* and travel history
- Quarantine plan

You may still be selected for random arrival testing but those selected for testing will no longer be required to quarantine while awaiting their test results. Please note that the Government of Canada’s requirements are non-emergency tests, and as a result, are not eligible under guard.me policies. In addition, any request for subsequent non-emergency tests while in a government-prescribed quarantine period are not eligible expenses; any non-emergency tests required by a third party are not eligible expenses.
Should a period of quarantine be mandated by the Government of Canada, all travellers, including students, will need to comply with the Government of Canada guidelines, and should review with their institution any arrangements for quarantine. All travellers, including students, are required by law to follow the prescribed quarantine instructions. The Government of Canada may impose penalties upon those individuals who do not comply with the current requirement to quarantine.
Important Information for guard.me Insured Students in Canada
If your guard.me policy is valid, you are covered for all medically necessary treatment for new and emergent conditions, including COVID-19. You can check the dates of your coverage on your guard.me Healthcare Access Card.
However, coverage for COVID-19 does not include costs associated with self-isolation or mandated quarantine. Private accommodation and day-to-day expenses (food and non-emergency transportation) are not eligible for reimbursement. What is eligible is medically necessary treatments for new and emergent conditions.
If your policy is going to expire, and your academic institution is unable to extend your current policy, you can purchase insurance through the institution’s microsite or www.guard.me.
If you arrived early and are waiting for classes to start, you may be eligible to purchase early arrival insurance through the institution's microsite or www.guard.me.

Health Canada stipulates that all travellers who are eligible for COVID-19 vaccines should be fully vaccinated prior to departure. If you are eligible for a vaccine and have not been fully vaccinated, Health Canada suggests you delay departure until you have received a full course of a vaccine. As well, to be eligible for coverage under a guard.me policy, you must meet Health Canada’s vaccine requirements.
